Design story

A rare 1960s Bauhaus‑style desk lamp crafted by VEB Narva Leuchtenbau in Lengefeld, located in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). This piece embodies the precision and understated elegance of East German industrial design, blending functional engineering with sculptural mid‑century aesthetics.

Featuring a swivelling, adjustable lampshade, the lamp offered exceptional flexibility for its time — a hallmark of Narva’s forward‑thinking approach to lighting design. Although its clean geometric silhouette is often mistakenly attributed to Louis Kalff, the design is an authentic creation of VEB Narva Leuchtenbau, one of the GDR’s most prolific lighting manufacturers.

By the mid‑1960s, Narva produced over 1.5 million lamps annually, exporting 80% of its output and offering more than 120 different models. This desk lamp is a testament to that era of innovation: refined proportions, durable construction, and a timeless Bauhaus‑inspired form.

This example remains in excellent vintage condition, a highly collectible piece for enthusiasts of mid‑century modern, Bauhaus‑influenced, and East‑German industrial design.

A sculptural, functional, and historically rich lighting icon from the GDR.
