Design story
Alvar Aalto Stool designed in 1935. The stool features birch legs and a low back made of bent birch plywood. K65 is a timeless classic that will charm in any home and office. The stool is manufactured by Artek Finland and it became famous for its innovative approaching the legs where formed and manufactured. The way the wooden legs are bend is based on an Aalto invention.
The wood is first bent to a 90 degree angle using heat and steam. It is then mounted to the underside of the seat using screws. This invention was a major step ahead towards genuine series production of furniture as it meant complicated joins were no longer required and therefore less manual work is involved.
Aalto (1898-1976) was, and still is, the best-known Finnish architect and designer. After graduating at the Helsinki Institute of Technology in 1921, his career as an architect started. One of his most important projects was the design of the tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland. This project marked the beginning of Aalto’s furniture designer as he not only designed the building but also all the furniture including lighting.
