Design story

Hans J. Wegner coffe table from the 1960s manufactured by Andreas Tuck.

Hans Wegner coffee table is an example of aesthetic and simple design. Combined with classic craftsmanship the table is a typical example of Wegner’s attention to detail and humble approach to innovative living.

Wegner established relationships with a number of furniture manufacturers in Denmark. In 1949 Wegner designed the Y chair, which Carl Hansen & Søn started producing in 1950 and they soon became the manufacturer of Wegner’s chairs. Andreas Tuck became the manufacturer of Wegner’s dining and coffee tables. Getama was the manufacturer of beds and later also some of Wegner’s lounge chairs.

Although there is little information available regarding Andreas Tuck, the company was one of the greatest furniture design companies in the middle of the 20th century. Their success took off in the 1950s when the collaboration with Wegner began. Together they designed and produced pieces that set the scene for classic Danish craftsmanship. The coffee table from 1960s is an a great example hereof with its simple, functional and modest design, made of quality material.

Having designed more than 500 chairs, Wegner was one of the most productive designers in the 1950s and 1960s. It was the chairs that made Wegner world famous. His tables, however, were of an equally high professional and aesthetic standard. Especially Hans Wegner coffee table gave him great recognition among fellow designers. Exports of Wegner’s furniture increased sharply during the 1950s and 60s, and approx. half of the furniture that he exhibited at his workshop came into production. Wegner stopped designing furniture in 1993, and instead became an advisor to his one daughter, architect Marianne Wegner, who was hired at the design studio in 1973 to be in charge of his furniture. Wegner designed his last chair in 1990 and died in 2017.
