Danish modern sofa by Børge Mogensen (model 2208). Produced by Fredericia Furniture. The sofa has legs made in oak and has loose cushions with foam. Newly reupholstered in black buffalo leather by a professional furniture upholsterer in Denmark.
Born from a desire to create the ultimate sofa, Mogensen designed the first 22-series sofa for his own home in 1962. The unpretentious yet elegant sofa is in line with Mogensen’s goal of creating furniture for the people. Furthermore, with its functional design he wanted to enhance people’s everyday lives. He is also known for his preferred materials of solid wood, brass, natural leather, and woolen textiles, emphasizing the longevity of his designs.
Today, the Børge Mogensen 22-series sofa is probably the most iconic mid-century Danish design sofa. It can be found in upscale settings, such as embassies, corporate headquarters, private residences, galleries and museums around the globe.
Børge Mogensen is one of the most recognisable names in Danish Modern Design and known throughout the world. Mogensen started as a cabinet maker in 1934 and later studied furniture design followed by architecture. He graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Furniture School, led by Kaare Klint. Klint and Mogensen would later form a deep and long lasting mutual respect for each others work and design philosophies.
After graduating, Mogensen worked with Kaare Klint and many other influential designers. At the age of 28 he was appointed to the position of chief designer at FDB Møbler design studio (FDB being the Danish manufacturing and retail cooperative, of which nearly a fifth of the Danish population are members of).
Børge Mogensen left FDB in 1950 in order to establish his own studio. In 1952, he started working with a gentleman called Andreas Graversen. Graversen took over the famous and respected furniture manufacturer, Fredericia Furniture and Børge Mogensen became their first retained designer. He helped shape the vision of the company. Furthermore, he changed the way the world looks at design.
